'Sustainable construction with environmentally friendly materials is often emphasised. However, it is important to ensure that such sustainability is also achieved on construction sites using eco-friendly products,' the German Holzindustrie (HDH) says.
The opportunities for this are provided by the Building Products Regulation (BauPVO), adopted by the European Parliament in April. However, according to the HDH, it is not sufficient for a sustainability transition in construction. The association also warns of burdens on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) due to the new regulation.

Around half of Germany's waste comes from construction. The building sector accounts for approximately 40% of Germany's greenhouse gas emissions (GHG emissions), through the construction and operation of buildings. The potential for waste reduction and GHG emission reduction is immense. The Building Products Regulation adopted by the European Parliament in April provides important guidelines to tap into this potential.
The revised Building Products Regulation stipulates that covered products must now be equipped with a digital product passport, allowing instructions and information, such as QR codes, to be directly accessed on construction sites. While this sounds practical and can be, it is likely to entail additional effort for providers because, whether digital or analogue, the list of required information tends to expand compared to previous regulations. This could potentially lead to further burdens for the industry.
