Impact of the US TikTok-ban on interior designers

US President Biden signed a bill this week that requires TikTok's owner, ByteDance, a Chinese media conglomerate, to sell its stake in the company within a year or face a nationwide ban. The question is how this design will impact designers and their profession.

TikTok has emerged as a dominant force in social media, with approximately 170 million American users, accounting for roughly half of the country's population. For designers, TikTok has come to serve as a lead generator and a platform for opportunities like brand partnerships and licensing deals.

Given Biden's recent move involving TikTok, designers may wonder how to respond to the news of a possible TikTok ban. Paige Kylee Knapp, founder of Kylee Social, has advised against immediate panic or shutting down TikTok accounts in an article on Business Of Home. While the potential consequences are significant, they won't be felt until at least 2025. Content creators and designers are advised to continue operating on the platform as usual.

At the same time, it is suggested exploring other platforms and starting to transition content onto these. Platforms such as Instagram and Pinterest are possible alternatives. It is also advisable to diversify marketing strategies beyond social media, so that they don't rest solely on a single platform. Email lists and personal websites are another way to get one's voice out there.
