Adopted EU regulations have big impact on furniture industry

EU regulations, including ESPR, adopted by the EU Parliament On April 23, the EU Parliament passed two regulations - ESPR (Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation) and R2R (The Right to Repair) - which will significantly impact the European furniture industry.

TMF, representing wood and furniture companies, has actively engaged in the process of shaping these EU regulations and welcomes this crucial step forward.

'The autumn trilogue resulted in a fully negotiated proposal, published just before Christmas, so this outcome was expected,' says Robin Ljungar, head of sustainability at TMF. TMF, in collaboration with EFIC, closely monitored the development of these regulations and advocated for the industry's interests throughout the process. With the imminent formulation of product-specific requirements, we are now entering a critical phase. What was previously abstract and uncertain is now taking concrete shape within the regulatory framework.

Looking ahead, the EU's Council of Ministers is anticipated to formally adopt the ESPR Regulation in May. Subsequently, the legislation will be published in the EU's official gazettes and will come into effect 20 days later. Product-specific regulations will be introduced for various categories, with furniture and mattresses being prioritized under the ESPR regulation.

The Commission's work plan for defining product priorities is expected to be released in spring 2025. However, TMF has received preliminary indications that the process of formulating product-specific requirements for furniture may commence as early as the beginning of autumn. TMF, in conjunction with EFIC, has already initiated discussions and data compilation efforts to classify and define furniture products.
