UK luxury bedmaker Harrison Spinks unveils sustainability initiatives

Harrison Spinks, a fifth-generation family-owned luxury bed and components manufacturer in the UK, is making waves in the bedding industry with its latest sustainability-focused initiatives. The company's new Impact Report highlights a series of measures aimed at improving environmental impact, enhancing local ecosystems, and nurturing both colleagues and communities.

With approximately 500 employees under its wing, Harrison Spinks is already recognised as one of the largest growers of hemp in the UK. Now, the company plans to expand its sustainability efforts by increasing its flax crop from 20 to 120 acres, replacing cotton. This shift not only aligns with the British climate but also eliminates the need for pesticides or irrigation.

Innovations within the company's Yorkshire-based spring manufacturing business are also making strides. A patent-pending, pocket coiling machine has been introduced, significantly reducing energy consumption by 60% and minimising raw material usage, furthering the company's commitment to sustainable practices.

Partnering with Scottish luxury accessories manufacturer Alex Begg, Harrison Spinks is now upcycling clean, high-quality cashmere offcuts to replace virgin cashmere wool in its mattress fillings, leading to lower transport emissions.

The impact of these initiatives is substantial. Last year alone, Harrison Spinks' hemp crop absorbed over 3,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions, equivalent to its annual Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions combined.

Looking ahead, the company is doubling down on its commitment to sustainability. Investments in weaving its own mattress ticking fabric from naturally fire-retardant wool and creating pocket springs through efficient wire-drawing processes are expected to yield significant energy savings.

As the only UK bed manufacturer with its own farms and an extensive in-house production capability, Harrison Spinks is leading the charge towards a more sustainable future.
