In February 2024, 18,200 dwellings were permitted for construction in Germany. According to preliminary results from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), this was 18.3% or 4100 building permits fewer than in February 2023. Compared to February 2022, the number of building permits decreased by 35.1% or 9900 dwellings. The results include both building permits for dwellings in new buildings and for new dwellings in existing buildings.

A total of 28 200 dwellings were permitted for construction in newly erected residential buildings from January to February 2024. This was 24.9% or 9 300 dwellings fewer than in the same period of the previous year. The number of building permits for single-family houses decreased by 35.1% (-3,300) to 6,100. For two-family houses, the number of permitted dwellings decreased by 15.4% (-400) to 2,200. Also, for the most numerous type of buildings, multifamily houses, the number of permitted dwellings decreased significantly, by 21.5% (-5,100) to 18,600 dwellings.
