Swedish E-commerce shows continued growth

The Swedish Trade E-commerce Indicator for the month of March estimates e-commerce turnover at SEK 12.1 billion. This means that e-commerce continues to grow in turnover during 2024 compared to 2023.

In total, the turnover growth for the first quarter amounts to 11 percent. This means that e-commerce's long period of negative turnover growth is broken after nine quarters. Moreover, the growth is the strongest since the first quarter of 2021.

'There are strong indications that this is the turning point that e-commerce has long been looking forward to, which is much-needed for many product categories,' says Per Ljungberg, Innovation Manager at the Swedish Trade.

Almost all product categories see an increase in turnover during the first quarter compared to the same quarter in 2023.

'E-commerce is also affected by inflation and high interest rates. Adjusted for inflation, e-commerce volume decreased by approximately 1% compared to last year, which is evidence of the tough situation in retailing right now. However, positive signals in the form of lower interest rates and upcoming interest rate decisions bode well for e-commerce going forward,' says Per Ljungberg.
