The German National Association for Nature Conservation (NABU) received backing for its advocacy of mattress recycling in Germany from the Fachverband Matratzen-Industrie (German Specialist Association of the Mattress Industry). This collaboration underscores a shared commitment to implementing sustainable practices in the furniture sector.
NABU has been vocal in its call for the establishment of an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) system to address the prevalent issue of mattress disposal in the country. Currently, over 95 percent of discarded mattresses in Germany end up being incinerated, contributing to environmental degradation and resource wastage.

A recent study conducted by the Öko-Institute, commissioned by NABU, explored methods to enhance circularity in mattress management, focusing on reuse, as well as mechanical and chemical recycling techniques. The findings underscore the necessity of adopting an EPR framework to promote resource conservation and foster a circular economy for mattresses.
These sentiments are echoed by the Fachverband Matratzen-Industrie, representing manufacturers across Germany. The association acknowledges the pressing need for a paradigm shift in mattress disposal practices and is actively engaged in developing strategies to mitigate environmental impact.
