Demand for mattresses significantly declined in Austria

The general decrease in consumer interest in modernizing home furnishings was also felt in the market for mattresses and bed bases last year. According to the latest BRANCHENRADAR report on mattresses and bed bases in Austria, demand decreased by around seven percent in 2023 compared to the previous year. As selling prices rose once again, manufacturer revenues decreased by 2.8 percent compared to the previous year to a total of 147.2 million euros.

The decline was solely attributable to significantly fewer replacement purchases. Compared to the previous year, around 80,000 fewer mattresses were replaced in private households. In the commercial sector, there was only an increase of 2,000 units. In the consumer market, inflation over recent years proved to be a major obstacle. In 2023, the average price of a mattress was 23 percent higher than three years prior.

Against the backdrop of high inflation, a pessimistic mood, and a shift in household spending towards the areas of dining, vacation, and leisure, mattress replacement was postponed in many places. As a result, the average replacement period increased from 10.6 to 11.7 years. In the commercial sector, mattresses are typically replaced every eight years.
