"Sustainability is our core competitive strength"

Flooring specialist strengthens commitment to bio-based and PFAS-free products

Swedish flooring specialist Bona has presented its Sustainability Report 2025. Despite a year marked by geopolitical uncertainty and economic headwinds, the family-owned company remains committed to its sustainability strategy. The most notable milestone is a 46 per cent reduction in its own greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1 and 2) compared to the 2022 baseline year.

Bona, which operates globally in more than 90 countries, no longer views sustainability as an administrative obligation, but as a strategic driver of innovation and growth. According to interim CEO Lidija Broström, the company's core mission, extending the life of floors, is the most effective way to reduce the sector's climate impact.

Renovation as a climate solution
A key element in the report is the scientific case for floor renovation versus replacement. A new study by the Swedish Environment Institute (IVL) in 2025 confirms that sanding and refinishing floors reduces CO2 emissions by an average of 83 per cent to 89 per cent compared to installing a new floor. This applies not only to parquet, but also to vinyl and linoleum.

Challenges in the chain (Scope 3)
Although Bona is making strong progress in its own facilities, such as in Malmö and Limburg, the main challenge lies in Scope 3 emissions, which originate from suppliers and logistics partners.

  • Supplier policy: A new supplier evaluation process was introduced in 2025 and now covers 70 per cent of total procurement.
  • PFAS-free: Bona continues to phase out substances of concern, including PFAS, despite delays in European legislation under REACH and CLP.
  • Bio-based: New bio-based cleaning products have been launched in the EMEA and APAC regions, consisting of more than 90 per cent natural ingredients.

Figures and targets
The report shows stable energy consumption despite an increase in sales volumes. Energy intensity per unit produced decreased in 2025. However, there are areas for improvement: the target for the use of recycled plastic (PCR) in packaging was not fully achieved due to delays in U.S. production lines for adhesives and lacquers.

Focus on the craftsman
In addition to environmental efforts, Bona is focusing on the social dimension, referred to as Care for People. Through the Bona Certified Craftsman Programme, thousands of professionals are trained each year in dust-free sanding and the safe handling of chemical products. The aim is not only to ensure floor quality, but also to protect the health of applicators.

"As a family business, we have a responsibility to take a long-term view," says Björn Johansson, Global Sustainability Director at Bona. "For us, sustainability is the only path to long-term competitiveness and resilience."
