Capital injection is necessary

Maisons du Monde struggles with mounting debt

The future of the French interior design chain Maisons du Monde is uncertain. After "long and intense talks" with financial partners, the company has failed to reach agreements on new capital or debt restructuring. It is now initiating an emergency process to attract external investors and ensure business continuity.

The situation is critical: the chain is burdened by high debt levels and weakening cash flow. A €25 million loan is due for repayment as early as 22 April, increasing pressure on management to find a solution. According to an official press release, negotiations with banks broke down due to a combination of a tense geopolitical environment and a highly challenging consumer market.

Sales below billion mark
The financial strain is clearly reflected in the figures. In late January, the chain reported a 5.4 per cent decline in sales for 2025. As a result, revenue fell below the one billion euro mark for the first time, reaching €947.3 million. On 17 April, the group will publish its full-year results, where it also aims to provide an update on discussions with potential new partners.

Consequences for Benelux
The uncertainty is also affecting the Belgian market, where Maisons du Monde is a notable player with 19 stores and more than 250 employees. While the stores remain open for now, the future of the physical locations depends on securing additional funding. Retail sector experts are closely monitoring developments, as any restructuring process often includes the closure of less profitable outlets.

Capital injection as a last resort
The search for third-party investors is broad. Maisons du Monde is open to various scenarios, including full capital injections from new shareholders. Through this, the company aims to stabilise its position, finance its current business plan, and safeguard operations in Europe.
