In the fourth quarter alone, e-commerce sales rose 5.3% year-on-year to about €291 billion ($316.1 billion), representing 16.6% of total retail activity. This steady growth reflects increased consumer reliance on online platforms, driven by convenience, broader product selection and improved digital shopping experiences.
Furniture and home furnishings represent an estimated 7–9% of total U.S. e-commerce sales. Online home furnishings sales reached roughly €68 billion ($74 billion), accounting for nearly half of all transactions in the category. Bedroom and living room furniture remain the most popular segments, making up around 35% of online furniture purchases.
While online shopping continues to gain traction, challenges such as high shipping costs can still deter consumers. At the same time, physical stores remain important, as many shoppers prefer to see and test furniture before completing purchases online.
This trend reinforces the importance of omnichannel strategies, where retailers combine in-store experiences with strong e-commerce platforms. In the evolving U.S. market, having a robust online presence is no longer optional but essential for capturing consumer demand.
