German furniture retailer to close all stores after 75 years

After more than seven decades in operation, A prominent German furniture retailer is set to close its Munich-area branch as part of a nationwide shutdown, marking the end of a long-standing family business. The company confirmed that all locations across Germany will cease operations by the end of 2026, bringing nearly a century of trading to a close.

Flamme Küchen & Möbel was founded in 1929 in Bremen. Flamme operated multiple stores in cities including Berlin, Hanover and Fürth, employing around 300 people and selling roughly 3,000 kitchens annually. Despite its heritage and established presence, management stated that the business is no longer economically viable, citing a combination of economic, regulatory and political pressures behind the decision.

A large-scale clearance sale is currently underway at its 6,000-square-metre store in Kirchheim-Heimstetten near Munich, with discounts of up to 50% across furniture, kitchens, home accessories and textiles. Additional promotional offers are also being applied to accelerate stock liquidation. Despite the closure, the company has assured customers that delivery, installation and after-sales services will continue throughout the wind-down period.

The decision reflects broader challenges facing traditional furniture retailers in Europe, where rising costs, shifting consumer behaviour and increasing competition are putting pressure on long-established business models. Flamme's closure signals not only the end of a company, but also the continued transformation of the retail furniture landscape.
