Arper unveils Aom seating system built on radical material reduction

Arper introduces Aom, a new seating collection by Jean-Marie Massaud, at Salone del Mobile 2026, presenting a design approach centred on material reduction, sustainability and adaptability across indoor and outdoor environments.

The collection, comprising sofas and armchairs, is defined by what the brand describes as "a principle of subtraction: reducing to achieve quality, lightening to expand possibilities of use." This philosophy extends beyond aesthetics to encompass environmental responsibility, where simplification of form and construction directly contributes to reduced material impact.

Designed to move fluidly between settings, from lounge areas and lobbies to terraces and outdoor spaces, Aom maintains a consistent visual language while offering flexibility in use. Its lightweight structure enables easy reconfiguration, supporting evolving spatial needs in both residential and contract environments.

Sustainability is embedded at the core of the collection's construction. Arper emphasises that "materials designed to last and geared toward recovery, reduction of components, clarity of assembly" form the foundation of the project. The system is built from only two interlocking components: a structure made from expanded polypropylene (EPP), known for its durability and lightness, and a padding layer in Breathair®, a recyclable polyester elastomer.

This material combination represents a notable technical development within the sector, as it allows for "the complete elimination of polyurethane, a significant achievement, considering the material's recycling complexity." The Breathair® padding also delivers enhanced comfort through elasticity, breathability and water resistance, further reinforcing the collection's suitability for both indoor and outdoor use.

Available in one-, two- and three-seat configurations, Aom responds to the growing demand for modular, lightweight and sustainable seating solutions. Its pared-back construction aligns with broader industry shifts towards circular design principles, where longevity, recyclability and material transparency are increasingly prioritised.

With Aom, Arper continues to explore how design can reconcile comfort, performance and environmental responsibility, offering a seating system that reflects evolving expectations within the global furniture and interiors market.
