The retailer, which operated Value City Furniture and American Signature Furniture, filed for Chapter 11 in November 2025, citing declining demand, rising operating costs and a weak housing market. The business carried significant debt, with liabilities estimated between $500m and $1bn.
Store closures began earlier this year, with final clearance sales offering discounts of up to 60%. As of early April, all locations have ceased trading.
Court filings indicate that undelivered orders represent nearly $12m in claims, with customers required to submit claims before the end of April. Overall, approximately 36,000 claims worth $57m have been filed.
The collapse reflects ongoing pressure across the US retail sector, where shifting consumer behaviour, inflation and e-commerce growth continue to drive store closures.
While some competitors have restructured and recovered from bankruptcy, others continue to struggle, signalling further consolidation and disruption across the home furnishings market.
