Milan Design Week:

Riva1920 transforms cedar of lebanon into collectible design

Riva1920 presents a refined exploration of material innovation and craftsmanship with its latest showcase, From Nature to Home, unveiled at Salone del Mobile.Milano 2026. As part of a broader narrative built around "six woods | six products | six designers," the spotlight falls on Cedar of Lebanon, an essence that merges environmental responsibility with contemporary design expression.

Recovered through planned felling, the Cedar of Lebanon is repositioned as a valuable resource rather than discarded material. The company highlights how "the fragrant Cedar of Lebanon logs are recovered by Riva1920 following planned felling, preventing this precious material from being discarded and turning it into value." This approach underlines a commitment to circular design principles, aligning with growing European demand for sustainable production methods.

Beyond its environmental credentials, the material offers notable functional benefits. Described as "naturally moth-repellent and resistant to humidity," cedar is further enhanced through advanced manufacturing processes, including the use of "5- and 6-axis CNC machinery." This combination of natural performance and technological precision enables Riva1920 to elevate raw material into highly refined design objects.

A key highlight of the collection is Molletta, a bench designed by Baldessari e Baldessari. Crafted from solid blocks of fragrant cedar, the piece is characterised by its sculptural quality and playful aesthetic. The design is defined as "a bench in solid, fragrant cedar, carved from unique blocks, with a sculptural design inspired by pop, oversized proportions," reflecting a balance between conceptual creativity and artisanal execution.

Since its introduction, Molletta has established itself as a signature piece within the Riva1920 catalogue, recognised for being "as simple as it is brilliant." Its enduring appeal is reinforced through the launch of a limited "100+6" edition, presented during the fair as part of the brand's ongoing dialogue between heritage and innovation.

Exhibited at the Riva1920 Building at Fiera Milano Rho, the collection contributes to a wider conversation around material authenticity and longevity in design. By transforming a historically significant wood into contemporary furniture, Riva1920 reinforces its position within the European design landscape as a brand that bridges tradition, sustainability and advanced production.

Through this initiative, Cedar of Lebanon becomes more than a material, it becomes a narrative medium, embodying a design philosophy where nature, technology and cultural value converge.
