Italian lighting brand Luceplan is celebrating the 40th anniversary of its iconic Costanza lamp with the launch of a special edition featuring three new lampshade designs.
Originally designed in 1986 by Paolo Rizzatto, Costanza has become one of the most recognisable pieces in contemporary lighting design, known for its lightness, functional simplicity and timeless aesthetic. Four decades on, Luceplan is revisiting the design with updated graphical interpretations that aim to refresh its visual identity while preserving its core characteristics.

The anniversary edition introduces three new patterned shades that reinterpret the diffuser as a creative surface. Through the interaction of light, material and design, the new versions explore additional expressive possibilities without altering the lamp's original structure or balance.
According to the company, the project reflects a broader design approach focused on evolution rather than reinvention. By maintaining the essential elements of the original design, Luceplan reinforces the enduring relevance of Costanza in a market increasingly driven by longevity and timelessness.
The update comes at a time when the lighting sector is placing renewed emphasis on adaptable, long-lasting products that can evolve with changing interior trends. Rather than replacing existing designs, brands are increasingly revisiting established icons through limited editions, new finishes or material innovations.
Costanza's continued development highlights this shift. Its minimal construction, combined with its recognisable silhouette, has allowed it to remain relevant across different interior contexts, from residential to contract environments, over multiple decades.
For the European interiors market, the anniversary underscores the value of design heritage as a strategic asset. Iconic products such as Costanza not only reinforce brand identity, but also provide a platform for incremental innovation that aligns with sustainability goals by extending product lifecycles.
With the introduction of the new shades, Luceplan demonstrates how established designs can be updated to meet contemporary aesthetic demands while retaining their original integrity—ensuring that Costanza continues to play a role in modern interiors, 40 years after its debut.
