Castro Lighting explores the enduring power of material

'At Salone del Mobile 2026, brass does not shout. It glows.'

At Salone del Mobile 2026, design returns to its essence. Under the overarching theme A Matter of Salone, the edition shifts the conversation away from surface and spectacle, focusing instead on the origin of all design: material itself. As organisers describe it, the concept "proposes a deeper perspective on what comes before form and function," inviting a more reflective reading of objects and their underlying substance.

Held from April 21 to 26 at Fiera Milano Rho, the fair once again brings together the global design industry in a setting where creativity, craftsmanship and innovation intersect. However, this year's direction marks a notable shift. Rather than prioritising narrative or technological advancement, the 2026 edition turns towards "process, authenticity, and the transformative power of material," positioning matter not as a secondary element, but as the foundation of design thinking.

Within this framework, Castro Lighting's presentation, The Art of Brass, emerges as a direct response to the fair's curatorial theme.

According to the brand, the concept "highlights brass as a source of richness, light, and decorative depth," positioning the material as central to its identity. Long associated with permanence and refinement, brass is presented not merely as a finish, but as a defining element of design. Castro Lighting describes it as "more than a medium," stating that it becomes "the central element through which the brand communicates its vision of refined and expressive design."

This material-led approach is evident in the way brass is explored across the collection. The brand emphasises how "brass is felt in the atmosphere of each piece, in the balance between sculptural presence and refined detail," as well as in "the way light interacts with surface, tone, and form." Rather than remaining static, surfaces are designed to respond to light and context, creating variations in depth and perception.

Presented at Hall 15, Stand A24, the installation is conceived as more than a product display. Castro Lighting frames it as "a world of elevated design, where every piece is conceived to enrich spaces with distinction, beauty, and character." Collections such as Ray, Burj and Magma demonstrate the versatility of brass, moving between expressive forms and precise detailing while maintaining a consistent material language.

This approach aligns closely with the broader direction of Salone del Mobile 2026. By foregrounding material, the fair encourages designers and brands to move beyond aesthetic trends and reconnect with the fundamentals of making. The emphasis, as outlined by the organisers, is on a more thoughtful interpretation of design, one that prioritises authenticity and process over immediacy.

In this context, The Art of Brass reflects a wider shift within the industry. Castro Lighting notes that its presentation "reveals brass's enduring power to define space with elegance and identity," suggesting that material-driven design can operate across both expressive and functional dimensions.

As discussions around sustainability, longevity and cultural value continue to shape the design landscape, this renewed focus on material signals a broader evolution. Objects are increasingly evaluated not only for their visual impact, but for their composition, durability and meaning over time.

At Salone del Mobile 2026, this perspective is distilled through a clear message: material is no longer background, it is central to the narrative. As Castro Lighting's presentation suggests, when material is fully understood and intentionally applied, it has the capacity to shape not only objects, but the spaces and experiences around them.
