JYSK accelerates Dutch expansion with acquisition of five former Leen Bakker stores

JYSK is strengthening its footprint in the Netherlands with the acquisition of five former Leen Bakker stores, marking a significant step in its national expansion strategy.

The Scandinavian home furnishings retailer will take over locations in Amsterdam, Leek, Veendam, Zierikzee and Meppel. Four of the stores, Amsterdam (Van Bleiswijkstraat), Leek, Veendam and Zierikzee, are set to open simultaneously on 15 April, with the Meppel store following on 13 May. A number of Leen Bakker employees will transition to JYSK as part of the takeover.

All five locations will be converted into fully-fledged JYSK stores, redesigned according to the company's latest Scandinavian retail concept. Dedicated opening teams, consisting of experienced store fitters and staff from existing branches, have been deployed to carry out the transformations.

The expansion coincides with JYSK's 20-year anniversary in the Netherlands, where the retailer has grown into a well-established player with more than 100 stores.

"We have invested many millions in upgrading all our stores. This puts us in a strong position and ready for the future," said Frank Christant, Country Director for JYSK Netherlands, Belgium and France. "We are now focusing on further expansion, and the acquisition of these five stores fits perfectly with that strategy. We see plenty of opportunities to continue growing and capitalising on market potential."

Following the opening of the newly acquired sites, JYSK will launch a brand-new store in Barneveld in June, bringing its total number of Dutch locations to 110. The company's long-term ambition is to reach at least 140 stores in the country.

JYSK reports that its growth continues to outperform the wider market. In the first six months of its current financial year, ending in August, revenue increased by double digits.

"Consumers know they can always count on good value for money with us. Combined with attractive collections and personalised advice, this allows us to continue accelerating our growth," Christant added.

The retailer will celebrate the opening of the first four stores on 15 April from 09:00 with in-store promotions and customer-focused activities.

Alongside its Dutch expansion, JYSK is also growing in Belgium, where it is taking over eight Leen Bakker stores and a number of employees.
