A major retailer on the UK high street has entered administration, triggering a wave of store closures and placing approximately 2,500 jobs at risk amid deteriorating trading conditions.
The discount retailer,The Original Factory Shop, has begun shutting branches in Cromer and Gorleston in Norfolk, and Bungay in Suffolk, with further closures scheduled in the coming days. The move follows what the company described as an "alarming drop-off in pre-Christmas footfall", which left administration as "the only option".

Customer-facing statements described the situation as "sad news", while clearance sales have been launched across stores, urging shoppers to purchase remaining stock as "when it's gone, it's gone".
The retailer's financial position reflects significant strain, with administrators estimating more than £30m owed to unsecured trade and expense creditors. Total unsecured liabilities are reported to stand at £114m.
The collapse underscores broader challenges facing UK retail, including declining footfall, shifting consumer behaviour and sustained pressure on discretionary spending. It also highlights ongoing instability across value-led retail segments, where margins remain tight and demand increasingly volatile.
As administrations and closures continue across the high street, the situation points to a prolonged period of restructuring within the UK retail landscape.
