Austria's timber market is showing clear signs of strain, with demand for softwood logs declining amid a broader economic slowdown. According to LK Austria's March 2026 report, weak industrial output, reduced construction activity and rising energy costs are weighing heavily on the sector, while geopolitical tensions linked to the Iran war are further dampening market sentiment.

The sawmill industry is currently well stocked with coniferous sawlogs, particularly in northern regions where demand remains relatively stable. However, conditions have softened in the south and west, with transport bottlenecks and supply restrictions contributing to delays and forest stock build-ups. Prices have largely held steady, though some downward pressure is emerging.
Elsewhere, industrial wood demand is mixed. Lower stockpiling by pulp and panel industries has led to modest price increases for pulpwood in certain regions, while panel wood prices have declined. In contrast, hardwood demand, particularly for oak and ash, remains strong, highlighting a growing divergence across timber categories.
