Tariff turmoil shakes U.S. rug industry as firms battle losses

The U.S. rug industry is grappling with ongoing uncertainty after a turbulent period of shifting tariffs on Indian imports disrupted supply chains, pricing strategies and long-term planning.

The situation stems from tariffs introduced in August 2025, when duties on Indian goods were raised to 50%, significantly impacting a key sourcing market for handcrafted rugs. Although the U.S. Supreme Court later ruled these tariffs unlawful, companies are now pursuing legal action to recover millions of dollars paid during the nearly five-month period. However, refunds are not automatic, forcing firms such as Jaipur Living and Rugs America to seek court intervention.

While tariffs have since been reduced, continued policy changes, including adjustments to baseline rates, have created an unstable operating environment. Many importers were forced to either absorb rising costs or pass them on to customers, leading to delayed orders, cancellations and pressure on margins.

Industry players warn that the unpredictability of trade policy is now the biggest challenge. With rug production reliant on long lead times and artisan networks, companies are increasingly diversifying sourcing strategies while hoping for greater stability to restore confidence and demand.
