Seats and Sofas is compensating nearly 1,500 customers for unjustified costs incurred when claiming warranty. An investigation by the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) revealed that consumers had to bring their furniture to a branch themselves, pay for collection (€75), or for a technician to visit their home (€49.95), even though the statutory warranty applies free of charge. The total compensation amount exceeds €100,000.

According to Martijn Ridderbos, a member of the ACM board, consumers are entitled to a free solution when a product breaks down sooner than expected. "With this commitment, affected parties get their money back, and it is clear that companies must comply with the warranty rules."
Seats and Sofas has adjusted its policy: from now on, the company will collect furniture from customers itself or send a technician free of charge. Communication regarding warranty matters is being standardised, and employees are receiving training on legal regulations. Prices in stores and advertisements have also been made more clearly visible.
The compensation applies to costs incurred between 18 September 2023 and 18 September 2025. Affected parties will receive the amount automatically in their account no later than 13 April 2026.
The statutory warranty obligates sellers to repair, replace, or reimburse a product free of charge if it becomes defective within its expected lifespan through no fault of the buyer. Additional costs for inspection or transport are entirely at the seller's expense.
The ACM continues to monitor compliance with these agreements. The goal is a well-functioning guarantee system that encourages producers and sellers to supply high-quality, sustainable products, thereby contributing to a longer lifespan of goods and less waste.
