Alinea faces uncertain future as rescue bid sparks backlash

French furniture retailer Alinea faces an uncertain outcome as a last-minute takeover bid clashes with union opposition and ongoing financial instability.

The company, which operates 36 stores and employs around 1,200 staff, reported losses of €47 million on €162 million in turnover in 2024 and has been under judicial restructuring since November. A proposed acquisition by SDC Holding, a real estate group with no track record in furniture retail, initially collapsed in February before re-emerging with a revised offer.

The latest bid would retain 20 stores and 572 jobs, while discontinuing catering activities. However, unions have rejected the proposal, with some preferring liquidation over what they view as an uncertain recovery plan. Concerns centre on job security and the long-term viability of the buyer.

Meanwhile, several partial bids from companies including Ikea, Leroy Merlin and B&M target selected sites rather than the brand itself, signalling limited interest in preserving Alinea as a whole.

A court decision expected on 31 March will determine whether to approve the takeover, accept partial asset sales, or proceed with full liquidation, each carrying significant implications for employees and the brand's future.
