Two days after the Dutch fonQ Group filed for a moratorium, the first details are emerging about the dire situation at the online home furnishings giant. While administrators Jan Davids and Noor Zetteler assess the scale of the company's debt, the webshop has effectively come to a standstill: customers can browse, but they can no longer complete purchases.

Whereas the management of the holding company behind fonQ and Naduvi previously spoke of "substantial progress" in operations, the hard figures for the 2023 financial year (ending March 2024) tell a different story. Sales fell sharply by 26% to €49.6 million, while the net loss ballooned to €14.6 million, following a loss of €7.9 million the previous year.
Clock stopped..
The situation at fonQ Group highlights the vulnerability of the platform model in a cooling housing market. As a marketplace, fonQ acts as an intermediary for numerous manufacturers and interior brands. The Consumers' Association recently warned that, in the event of an imminent bankruptcy, warranty settlements could become a legal maze for consumers if the platform disappears.
Co-founder Patrick Kerssemakers, who left in 2016 after going independent under Ad Scheepbouwer, described the situation last December as a "race against the clock." That clock now seems to have stopped for the 260 shops under the group's care.
Naduvi Integration Becomes a Millstone
The 2024 acquisition of the outlet platform Naduvi, intended to generate synergy benefits, has in practice become a catalyst for the group's problems. The technology integration increased complexity and costs, while the expected profitability failed to materialize. For suppliers accessing their stock through fonQ or Naduvi, uncertain weeks now lie ahead. The administrators will be further briefed today (Tuesday) by the board on the exact creditor situation.
Key Facts at a Glance
-Revenue drop: A 26% decline in the most recent financial year.
-Losses: Total losses over the last two financial years exceed €22 million.
-Checkout closed: Although the sites remain live, the payment function has been deactivated.
-Administration: Lawyers Jan Davids and Noor Zetteler are exploring possibilities for a relaunch.
The fonQ Group is one of the key showcases for the mid-range interior design market. For many brands, fonQ is not just a sales channel but also a crucial partner for online visibility. A permanent loss of the group would leave a significant gap in the digital distribution strategies of many Dutch and Belgian manufacturers.
