Swiss family furniture store closes after 65 years amid retail pressure

Owner of Möbel SIZ in Visp, Bruno Imboden, who has run the store since 1987, cited retirement and the inability to find a successor as the main reasons for the closure. Despite a loyal customer base and a 2,000 sqm showroom offering a wide range of home furnishings, the business could not secure its future.

The shutdown reflects broader industry pressures. Small retailers are increasingly squeezed by large chains offering lower prices and wider assortments, as well as the continued rise of online shopping. Rural and independent stores are particularly vulnerable in this environment.

A clearance sale with discounts of up to 70% is currently underway as the business winds down operations.

The closure will also result in job losses for long-serving employees, some of whom have been with the company for many years. Imboden expressed gratitude to his team, acknowledging their role in the company's decades of success.

The case underscores a wider trend across Europe, where independent retail—especially in furniture and home goods, is struggling to compete in an increasingly consolidated and digital market.
