Traditionally known for its large warehouse-style outlets located on the outskirts of major cities, IKEA is now experimenting with smaller-format stores designed to fit urban areas and regional markets. The move reflects changing consumer habits, with customers increasingly expecting easier access to brands, quicker shopping experiences and stronger integration between online and physical retail.
The new concept is intended to complement IKEA's existing retail network rather than replace its large stores. By establishing outlets in medium-sized cities, the company hopes to reach customers who may live far from its traditional megastores while also supporting online orders and pickup services.
IKEA France first announced the initiative in November 2025 as part of a broader strategy to modernize its distribution model and strengthen its presence across the country. The openings in Le Mans and Limoges will serve as pilot locations, helping the company evaluate how the smaller format performs before expanding the concept further.
The initiative reflects IKEA's broader shift toward more flexible retail formats and closer proximity to customers, a trend increasingly seen across the global furniture and home furnishings industry.
