Portuguese wood and furniture exports decline slightly as US sales grow

Portuguese exports of wood and furniture totalled €2.956 billion in 2025, marking a 2% decline compared with the previous year. Despite the overall drop, sales to the United States increased by 4.4%, highlighting the continued importance of the market for the sector.

According to figures from the Portuguese Association of Wood and Furniture Industries (AIMMP), the industry accounted for 3.7% of Portugal's total goods exports and 2.5% of imports, maintaining a positive trade balance of €120 million.

Spain remained the main export destination, representing 35% of total sales, followed by France with 25% and Germany with 5%. The United States and the United Kingdom also represented around 5% each, reflecting growing demand from these markets.

Performance varied across product segments. Wood packaging recorded the strongest growth, rising 7% year-on-year, followed by wood panels (+6%), carpentry and other wood products (+4%), and charcoal (+3%). In contrast, sawmilling experienced the largest decline at 7%, while furniture exports fell 5% and lighting products dropped 4%.

AIMMP president Vítor Poças said the trade tensions associated with tariffs introduced during the U.S. trade dispute did not significantly harm Portuguese exporters. In fact, higher tariffs on Asian competitors created a degree of competitive advantage for Portuguese companies.

At the same time, imports increased by 7% to €2.836 billion, raising concerns about the growing volume of timber imported for construction projects in Portugal.

To support international expansion, the AIMMP-led Inter Wood & Furniture programme continues to promote Portuguese companies in key markets including Europe, North America, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific.
