Tokyo-based design studio MEDUM will present an immersive installation titled "Light is Shadow" during Milan Design Week 2026, exploring the relationship between light and darkness through experimental materials and spatial design.
The installation will be on view from 20–26 April 2026 at Back12 in Milan's Tortona district, one of the city's key design hubs during the annual event. Through the project, MEDUM invites visitors to reconsider the balance between light and shadow, presenting them as complementary forces that shape perception, atmosphere and emotional experience.

At the centre of the installation is the Japanese concept of "Awai", which describes the subtle threshold or transitional space between opposing states. MEDUM interprets this philosophy through the use of inorganic electroluminescence (EL), a light-based material that enables the creation of soft, uniform illumination while maintaining flexibility and thinness.
The installation features a series of experimental prototypes developed with EL sheets that emit a diffused glow. Thanks to their multilayer structure, the sheets can be freely cut and shaped, allowing designers to produce original forms while minimising material waste. The material also offers high production efficiency and low energy consumption, qualities that align with the growing emphasis on sustainability in contemporary design.
Through this material exploration, MEDUM demonstrates how lighting technologies can move beyond purely functional applications and become tools for spatial storytelling and sensory engagement. The studio's approach highlights the potential of EL as both an artistic medium and a viable solution for industrial applications and commissioned projects where creativity and technical performance must coexist.

Alongside the central installation, visitors will also encounter an archive exhibition of MEDUM's most representative works. This presentation provides insight into the studio's creative methodology and emphasises the role of prototyping as a research process that bridges conceptual experimentation and final product development.
Founded by Shintaro Monden, MEDUM operates from Tokyo and works across product design, experiences and services for companies that prioritise innovation and formal quality. The studio's interdisciplinary team engages in the entire design process, from identifying project goals and analysing user needs to prototyping, product development and brand identity.
MEDUM's work has received international recognition, including iF Design Award, Red Dot Design Award, Cannes Lions Gold and the Dezeen Awards – Project of the Year. Its designs are also part of the permanent collections of major institutions such as Pinakothek der Moderne in Germany and Design Museum Danmark.
"Light is Shadow" will open with a press preview on 19 April (3–6 pm), followed by public viewing hours from 10 am to 7 pm (20–25 April) and 10 am to 4 pm (26 April).
