Popular English football team receives a players lounge makeover

Addlux has delivered a bespoke architectural lighting installation for the Players' Lounge at a recently redeveloped English football training complex, contributing to the transformation of the facility into a contemporary environment designed to support player wellbeing and collaboration.

The refurbishment of the Carrington Training Centre in Manchester, home to Manchester United F.C., was designed by Foster + Partners and constructed by Knight Build. The redevelopment introduces a modernised setting for players and staff, combining natural daylight, timber panelling and energy-efficient building systems within a series of open and interconnected spaces.

Within the Players' Lounge, Addlux supplied its LED sheet technology to form a large suspended light fitting that sits at the centre of the interior. Developed using Creolux tuneable white LED sheets, the installation provides uniform, shadow-free illumination while integrating with the architecture of the space.

The lounge features an expansive glass façade, a spiral staircase and a terrace overlooking the training pitches. The lighting scheme was designed to complement these architectural elements while contributing to a calm environment intended to support rest and recovery for players.

A key requirement of the project was ensuring the lighting system could integrate seamlessly within the bespoke ceiling feature without disrupting the material palette or spatial openness of the room. Addlux addressed this through ultra-thin LED sheets that allow the installation to maintain minimal depth while working alongside the timber finishes and open-plan layout.

The Creolux system also provides tuneable white lighting, allowing colour temperatures to be adjusted between energising and more relaxing tones depending on how the lounge is used throughout the day. High-density LED sheets ensure consistent light distribution, avoiding hotspots and maintaining an even visual effect across the suspended fitting.

To align with the architectural design, the LED sheets were custom fabricated to match the precise dimensions of the ceiling installation. The result is a softly illuminated lounge that supports the broader design intent of warmth, openness and natural light established in the redevelopment.

Niels Fullerton-Batten, Director at Addlux, commented on the project:
"This project demonstrates the versatility of our Creolux LED sheets and how bespoke architectural lighting can enhance both aesthetics and wellbeing. By integrating our technology within Foster + Partners' innovative design, we created a calm, high-quality environment for players to relax and recover."

The project illustrates the role of tailored lighting systems in high-performance sports environments, where architectural integration and occupant wellbeing are central considerations.
