Japanese brand Look into Nature will present a new evolution of its signature material igusa during Milan Design Week 2026, introducing fresh colour variations that reinterpret the traditional reed used in Japanese tatami mats.
The new palette includes SUMI-MUSUBI (deep black), SUMI-AMI (woven blacks and greys), SABI-GOZA (bronze rust) and KOKE-GOZA (moss green). These shades highlight the natural texture of the weave and enhance its three-dimensional surface, offering new possibilities for contemporary furniture and interior applications.

Rather than focusing solely on colour, the development represents a broader design approach that explores how traditional materials can interact with modern spaces. Combined with materials such as oak and walnut, igusa creates surfaces that capture light and introduce depth and warmth into interiors.
Beyond its aesthetic qualities, igusa also offers several functional benefits. The natural fibres help absorb pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide and formaldehyde, regulate indoor humidity and contribute to a healthier interior environment. With specific treatments, the material also provides durability while remaining easy to clean and maintain.
All pieces are produced in Japan using traditional artisanal techniques, from the cultivation of the reeds to the final hand-woven surface.
One of the key pieces highlighting this development is the Hazuki chair, which integrates the woven igusa surface into a continuous design that flows from seat to backrest. The chair combines shaped wood and slender steel legs, creating a balance between solidity and lightness while showcasing the new green hue.
With this preview in Milan, Look into Nature continues its exploration of how a millennia-old craft tradition can evolve within contemporary furniture design, reinforcing the brand's focus on material culture and sustainable design principles.
