Palma emerges as rising design hub with new generation of furniture studios

Mallorca's capital Palma in Spain is gaining recognition as a growing design centre, driven by a new wave of furniture studios blending craftsmanship with contemporary design.

Among the emerging names is Resmes, founded by Joan Morell and Elena García. The studio combines modern design with local craft traditions, producing made-to-order pieces such as the oak Cadira chair with handwoven seats and the aluminium Pleg collection. While rooted in Mallorca, the duo source materials more broadly to develop products for international clients.

Designer Adriane Escarfullery is also helping shape Palma's creative reputation. The Dominican-born designer creates bold, handcrafted chairs influenced by tropical modernism and Scandinavian design. After years developing his craft, a recent commission for a hotel project by architecture firm Ohlab is expected to significantly raise his profile.

Meanwhile, Studio Jaia, led by Anna Lena Kortmann, focuses on reinterpreting traditional woven furniture from the island. Working from a workshop and showroom in Palma, Kortmann and her team produce handcrafted seating using recycled cotton cord and locally made frames.

Together, these studios demonstrate how Palma is evolving from a historic craft centre into a contemporary design destination with global ambitions.
