AI reshapes online retail as French e-commerce nears €200 billion milestone

French e-commerce is approaching €200bn in annual revenue, reinforcing its role as a central channel in consumer purchasing behaviour.

According to figures released by the French Federation of E-commerce and Distance Selling (Fevad), the sector generated €196.4bn in 2025, representing a 7% increase compared with the previous year. The growth follows a 9.6% rise in 2024 and reflects continued expansion despite an uncertain economic environment.

The increase was driven largely by higher transaction volumes. A total of 3.2bn online purchases were recorded during the year, up 10% compared with 2024. However, the average basket value declined by 3% to €62 as consumers remained price conscious.

Service sales continued to lead growth, rising 9% to €120.3bn, while product sales increased 4% to €76.1bn. Within retail categories, electronics and household appliances grew 5.2%, sporting goods 5.1% and furniture and décor 3%.

E-commerce now represents around 12% of total retail product sales in France.

The sector is also being shaped by the growing use of artificial intelligence. Research conducted by Fevad and Odoxa found that 31% of online shoppers already use generative AI during their purchasing journey, mainly when researching products before making a decision.
