In January 2026, Japan increased its softwood lumber imports to 297,000 cubic meters, up 1% from the same month last year, when imports totalled 294,000 cubic meters. The supply sources varied, reflecting a diversified import strategy to meet domestic demand. Alongside softwood lumber, Japan's imports of laminated timber rose significantly, reaching 48,000 cubic meters, a year-on-year increase of roughly one third.

Despite this growth, the volume remains only half of the record level seen in January 2022, when imports hit 101,000 cubic meters. The data suggests a steady recovery in Japan's timber market, with particular growth in laminated timber reflecting ongoing construction and infrastructure activity, while overall softwood imports maintain a stable trajectory.
