Matalan announces UK store closures amid £25 million revamp

Matalan has confirmed the closure of three stores in 2026, with outlets in Pendle, Carlisle, and Leeds shutting by 7 March. The company has begun offering 50% discounts on merchandise following the announcements.

A spokesperson said the Carlisle closure is linked to a major redevelopment project, while the Leeds store closure this week saw staff reassigned. Matalan emphasised its commitment to supporting affected employees and exploring alternative positions.

Founded in 1985 by John Hargreaves, whose sons' names inspired the store brand, Matalan operates more than 265 outlets across the UK and internationally. Ownership transferred in early 2023 to a consortium led by Invesco, Man GLG, Napier Park, and Tresidor.

The closures coincide with a £25 million investment programme aimed at upgrading the retailer's shop portfolio. Plans include 10 new or repositioned stores in locations such as London, Essex, Hampshire, and Northern Ireland, alongside refurbishments of 30 existing branches. Enhancements will feature clearer layouts, consolidated payment points, faster self-service checkouts, and a new mobile app to improve the shopping experience.

Matalan stressed that physical stores remain central to its strategy, with the modernisation programme designed to attract new customers while improving service for existing shoppers.
