Primark to appoint new CEO amid leadership transition

Primark is expected to appoint Eoin Tonge as its permanent CEO, following a year-long tenure in the role on an interim basis. Tonge, who previously served as finance director for parent company Associated British Foods (ABF) since April 2023, joined the organisation from Marks & Spencer, where he held the position of chief financial and strategy officer.

His interim leadership followed the departure of former CEO Paul Marchant, who resigned after an investigation into alleged inappropriate behaviour.

The transition comes as ABF continues its search for a permanent leader, assessing both internal and external candidates. ABF has emphasised the importance of integrity and responsible leadership in its culture, reflecting the need for high ethical standards across the business. While the process is at an advanced stage, a final decision has not yet been confirmed.

Tonge's interim tenure has taken place during a challenging trading environment for Primark. The retailer reported a 2.7% decline in like-for-like sales globally for the 16 weeks to January 3, with European revenues falling 5.7%. Despite this, the business remains focused on stabilising leadership and supporting strategic growth in the fast fashion market.

With a track record of navigating complex organisational challenges and driving operational efficiency, Tonge continues to oversee a business focused on restoring momentum while maintaining its reputation for affordability and scale. The ongoing process is intended to strengthen Primark's operational performance and strategic direction following a period of leadership transition.

A spokesperson for Associated British Foods said:
"ABF announced in March 2025 the search for a permanent CEO. Since that time, the Board has undertaken a rigorous search, assessing both internal and external candidates. The process is at an advanced stage but we will not comment further until the process is complete".
