Ikea to close Rostock call centre leaving 279 jobs at risk

Ikea has announced it will close its Rostock (Germany) call centre by September 30, 2026, affecting 279 employees, according to the union ver.di. Negotiations over a social plan are set to begin, addressing potential internal transfers or severance arrangements. Decisions regarding possible industrial action will follow these discussions.

The union criticised Ikea's communication process, noting that the works council was informed only 30 minutes before the full staff about the closure. Ikea cited "long-term structural considerations," including an expiring lease and significant investment required to modernise the site. The company emphasised that the measure aims to ensure the "long-term strength and sustainable future of Ikea Germany" amid changes in the retail sector.

The closure only affects the Rostock call centre; the city's retail store remains operational. This site was one of three Ikea call centres in Germany, reflecting a broader strategy of streamlining operations while investing in other areas of the business.

The announcement comes amid ongoing adjustments in the retail landscape, as companies balance cost pressures with digital transformation and evolving customer service expectations. Employees and unions will closely monitor negotiations for fair compensation or redeployment options, while Ikea seeks to maintain its operational efficiency and competitive position in the German market.
