The Metropolitan Police has taken the lead in investigating the death of stonemason Marek Marzec, who died in November 2024 from silicosis, a fatal lung disease linked to prolonged exposure to stone dust. Officers are examining whether his death could amount to negligent homicide, a move that would give police primacy over the Health and Safety Executive.

Marzec had worked cutting stone products across London since 2012 and reportedly developed symptoms after years in unsafe conditions without adequate protection. Silicosis is incurable and has been associated with engineered and artificial stone widely used for kitchen and bathroom worktops.
At the time of his death, Marzec had begun legal action against several former employers with representation from Leigh Day. His legal team said he wanted to warn others about the risks of hazardous working practices.
A pre-inquest review hearing at Poplar Coroner's Court heard that police will interview further witnesses and respiratory experts over the coming weeks. If criminal charges follow, the case could set a UK precedent for employer liability linked to occupational silicosis.
