German upholstered furniture faced toughest year in recent history

The German upholstered furniture industry faced a difficult year in 2025, with total annual revenue falling 7.2 percent to approximately €873 million, according to figures from the Verband der Deutschen Polstermöbelindustrie.

December offered some relief, generating nearly €68 million in sales, a 4.25 percent increase year-on-year. However, this minor upswing could not offset the broader decline across the year. Domestic sales were hit hardest, with annual revenue down 8.31 percent, despite a modest 2.38 percent rise in December. The mid-year slump had seen declines of more than 11 percent, suggesting some recovery toward year-end.

Foreign sales were less severely impacted. December exports rose 7.77 percent, but the full-year result still showed a 5.11 percent decrease. Sales to the Eurozone posted a strong December gain of 28.39 percent, yet the annual figure remained down 5.59 percent.

Industry analysts note that the segment continues to be a "concern child" within the German furniture market, with modest late-year improvements offering limited comfort. The performance underscores the need for strategic adjustment, particularly in domestic operations, as manufacturers seek to stabilise revenues and address persistent challenges in both local and international markets.
