A new report from kitchen and appliance distributor LDD UK, conducted with Censuswide, highlights the current trading landscape for independent kitchen retailers across the UK. Nearly half of those surveyed (46%) reported a decline in sales over the past 12 months, with London retailers hardest hit (54%), while Scotland fared best (38%). Younger businesses (3–5 years old) were also most affected.

Despite these challenges, resilience and optimism remain strong. One in three independents achieved growth, often linked to niche offerings, regional positioning, and strong customer relationships. Over half of business decision-makers expressed confidence in their prospects for the coming year.
Key strategies for success identified by retailers include:
- Building long-term relationships with trusted suppliers and distributors (29%)
- Delivering exceptional customer service (24%)
- Investing in digital tools and online visibility (21%)
Arthur B. Leaker, Founder and MD of LDD UK, commented:
"Adaptability is key in difficult trading periods. Those focusing on relationships—with customers, suppliers, and distributors, are best positioned for future success."
The report surveyed 250 independent kitchen businesses across Greater London, the North West, North East, Yorkshire and the Humber, and Scotland, all with up to 20 staff and under £10M turnover.
