Croatia has gained international recognition in contemporary architecture as the Gruž City Market in Dubrovnik is named a finalist for the EUmies Awards, formally the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture, Mies van der Rohe Award. The project, developed by ARP Veljačić-Peračić studio under architects Miranda Veljačić and Dinko Peračić, joins other finalists from France, Belgium, Spain, and Slovenia.

The reconstruction revitalised almost the entire market, replacing floors and underground infrastructure, installing a new roof with rotating awnings, and adding movable sales tables and modern equipment. Surrounding pavements and underground waste containers were upgraded, while business premises along the eastern wall and the wall of Gundulić's summer residence were restored under Dubrovnik Conservation Department guidelines.
The redesigned market now functions as a flexible public space, supporting daily trade while hosting cultural and community activities. Already recognised with a D&D Award, the project reinforces Croatia's position among Europe's architectural elite, showcasing how contemporary design can honour heritage while creating vibrant, multi-purpose urban spaces.
