Blue takes the lead as homeowners rethink kitchen design

Blue has overtaken green as the most popular kitchen cabinetry colour in 2026, according to the latest Houzz Kitchen Trends Study. Polling over 400 homeowners, the research found 18% now choose blue for renovations, compared with 17% opting for green. Neutral shades such as grey (12%), off-white (9%) and white (8%) remain common, while wood tones are used by 9%.

The study also revealed broader renovation trends. Nearly three-quarters of homeowners modify their kitchen layout (72%), with 60% upgrading home systems and 33% refreshing walls. Worktops, cabinets, taps, and sinks were the most frequently updated features, followed closely by flooring, lighting, and splashbacks.

Homeowners cited kitchen deterioration (37%), the desire to personalise a new home (32%), and finally having the means to renovate (29%) as primary triggers. Around half (51%) expanded kitchen size, with most post-renovation kitchens measuring 20–30 square metres.

Special needs updates, particularly related to ageing, rose sharply year-on-year, with 25% addressing current needs and 37% planning for future needs. Marine Sargsyan, Houzz head of economic research, noted, "Homeowners are investing in improving the functionality of existing kitchens rather than moving, driving practical upgrades and efficient layouts."
