In the tranquil district of Paço do Lumiar, Lisbon, Santiago Studio has transformed a family home into a refined retreat where light, texture, and materiality take centre stage. The Lumiar Interior Design Project, spanning 500m² across two levels, demonstrates a masterful interplay between architectural intent and curated interiors, resulting in a home that feels both serene and sophisticated.

The project brief was deceptively simple: the family desired a purely monochromatic environment dominated by whites, beiges, and off-whites. For Santiago Studio, this was an opportunity to explore how subtle variations in tone, material, and texture could define space without the need for bold colour or ornamentation. In the bathrooms, micro-cement surfaces were applied with precision, transforming walls and countertops into tactile sculptures that interact gracefully with natural and artificial light. Similarly, the terrace becomes a calm, elegant space, inviting relaxation while maintaining visual continuity with the home's interiors.
The spatial flow is equally thoughtful. On the ground floor, social areas, including the entrance hall, open-plan living and dining spaces, kitchen, garden-access points, a wine bar, office, and garage, are designed to foster connection and conviviality. Upstairs, three suites and a terrace create a private sanctuary for rest and contemplation, ensuring the home balances communal life with personal retreat. Throughout, the architecture by Fragmentos informs every design decision, allowing furnishings and finishes to enhance rather than compete with the structural narrative.

A hallmark of the project is its curated collection of iconic and contemporary pieces. The living room features a Knoll Wassily armchair by Marcel Breuer, Miniforms Dumbo chairs, and a Maris Passe-Partout dining table by Magis, all layered with carefully chosen rugs and a custom-designed sofa. The wine bar showcases Vitra Cork stools by Jasper Morrison and a custom cork-finished carpentry, while the suites feature &Tradition Flowerpot table lamps and Artemide NH and Tolomeo Mega wall lamps, blending functionality with sculptural elegance. Even the terrace is elevated with Varaschin's BELT daybed, offering a perfect vantage point for both sun and serenity.
Custom elements reinforce the project's attention to detail. Handcrafted headboards, the living room sofa, and bespoke rugs exemplify Santiago Studio's commitment to precision and material tactility. The integration of furniture, lighting, and finishes is carefully orchestrated to support the home's overarching monochromatic and minimalist palette while celebrating texture and form.
Ultimately, the Lumiar Interior Design Project is a study in restraint and refinement. Every surface, piece of furniture, and light fixture is thoughtfully considered, creating an environment that balances architectural rigour with domestic comfort. The result is a home that feels simultaneously intimate and expansive, a personal gallery of contemporary good taste, and a sanctuary of light, texture, and timeless elegance.
