The imm cologne furniture trade fair took place this year from 20 to 23 January 2026, presenting a markedly different edition compared to the pre-pandemic events that once filled 12 halls. This year's show was held in a significantly reduced format, with just three halls in use, an adjustment that shaped both the atmosphere and visitor expectations.

From extensive to essential
Where once imm cologne was known for its expansive footprint and broad product offering, the 2026 edition reflected a strategic shift. The reduced size was apparent throughout the event, with the exhibition space concentrated on a core selection of 339 exhibitors from 28 countries. Notably, Chinese companies dominated the halls, with 252 exhibitors, signaling a strong focus on international sourcing amid changing market dynamics.
This reduction in scale was a key talking point among attendees, many of whom approached the show with moderated expectations. Industry veterans recalled the vibrant, sprawling fairs of previous years but acknowledged the pragmatic approach taken this time, where efficiency and targeted business meetings took precedence.
A b2b platform oriented toward sourcing
In response to evolving market conditions, imm cologne 2026 focused on mid-range and entry-level segments. This was a direct reaction to increased import activity and more scrutinised purchasing strategies by retailers facing economic pressures. The event emphasised being a practical sourcing platform rather than a broad consumer-oriented showcase.
According to Matthias Pollmann, Vice President Trade Fair Management at Koelnmesse, the smaller, more focused setup was designed to help visitors "quickly gain an overview, make strategic purchasing decisions, and establish new contacts." This approach aimed to meet the needs of professionals seeking efficiency in their trade fair experience.

International presence amid downsizing
Despite the smaller format, imm cologne attracted a solid turnout, with over 10,000 trade visitors representing 104 countries. The majority of both visitors (57%) and exhibitors (97%) were international, underscoring the event's continuing role as a global sourcing hub.
European visitors were led by strong contingents from the Benelux countries, France, and the UK, reflecting continued demand for efficient sourcing solutions within these markets.
Mixed reactions from the industry
Reactions to the scaled-down imm cologne were varied. Some exhibitors appreciated the more focused, business-driven environment, highlighting the fair's role in facilitating relevant international connections. Chavdar Targohov, international relations manager at Mebel-Stil, noted the practical advantages of the cologne location for global logistics and client access.
However, others lamented the loss of the larger, more diverse showcase, which in previous years had offered a wider spectrum of products and inspiration. The noticeable dominance of Chinese companies also sparked discussion about market concentration and the implications for European manufacturers.
The imm cologne organisers indicated that the fair's profile will continue to evolve in response to industry feedback.
