Ikea is expanding its circular economy initiatives in Sweden with the launch of a digital platform for second-hand furniture and home goods. Set to go live on January 28, the marketplace allows private individuals to buy and sell used Ikea products directly through the company's official channels. Sweden becomes the fifth market to adopt this platform, following Norway, Spain, Portugal, and Poland.

The platform aims to extend the lifecycle of Ikea products while offering an additional revenue channel for customers. According to Ikea, the European resale market for furniture is growing, with younger consumers particularly motivated by cost savings. Early data from other markets shows high demand for bedroom and living room furniture, as well as storage solutions.
For interiors retailers, designers, and suppliers, the platform represents a shift in consumer behaviour, emphasising resale, sustainability, and circular design. Sellers can scan products to automatically generate dimensions, images, and assembly instructions, while the system recommends pricing based on previous sales. Payment is flexible, either via bank transfer or as an Ikea gift card with a 15% bonus.
Kirsten Andersson, CEO of Platform & Marketplaces at Ingka Group, stated: "Our ambition is to make it easy and accessible for customers to sell and buy home furnishings, connecting people directly and integrating resale into the Ikea ecosystem."
The initiative is part of Ikea's broader strategy to combine new and second-hand offerings, providing designers, retailers, and B2B partners with insights into extended product lifecycles and resale demand patterns, trends increasingly relevant to the Swedish interiors and furniture market.
