Maison&Objet barometer shows home decor and design yields resilience amid economic challenges

Despite a difficult global economic environment in 2025, the home decor, design, and lifestyle sector has demonstrated notable resilience, according to the 11th edition of the "Maison&Objet Barometer." Nearly 70 percent of professionals reported stable or increasing business over the past six months, with sales primarily driven by affordable items such as decor, gifts, and wellness products. Inventory levels have been generally well-managed, and strong order intentions are expected for early 2026.

The report highlights that the sector faced multiple challenges, including a global economic slowdown, inflation in France, political uncertainty, and the introduction of international tariffs that affected exports, particularly to the United States. Nevertheless, distributors and retailers have adapted, maintaining sales volumes and introducing new brands to their offerings. Independent stores and large chains have typically added around five new brands between April and September 2025, while many distributors emphasised products that bring affordable style and functionality to homes.

Stock levels among distributors and brands have been largely stable, reflecting careful inventory management and operational agility. Nine out of ten retailers plan to place orders by March 2026, with more than half expecting to order equal or larger volumes than the previous year, indicating continued confidence in the market. Brands are also preparing for the next six months with plans to launch new products and maintain active market engagement.

Activity among specifiers, including architects, property developers, and landscape architects, has remained steady, particularly in residential projects, which are showing early signs of driving a recovery in France and abroad. Office and workspace projects have stabilized, with larger offices over 1,000 square meters showing momentum, although smaller offices and independent restaurateurs continue to face challenges. In the hotel and hospitality sector, over half of the professionals reported stable or increased activity compared to the previous year. Overall, the Maison&Objet Barometer reflects a sector that has weathered 2025's turbulence with adaptability and cautious optimism for 2026.
