A modernist classic refolded:

Fredericia revives Mogens Koch’s MK16

Fredericia Furniture has announced the relaunch of the MK16 Folding Chair by Mogens Koch, reaffirming its role as custodian of Denmark's most influential design legacies. Originally conceived in 1932, the MK16 Folding Chair is widely regarded as an icon of modern furniture design and a defining work of Danish Modernism.

Characterised by structural clarity, material intelligence and enduring relevance, the MK16 reflects Koch's uncompromising approach to craftsmanship and form. Every element of the chair is reduced to its essential function, resulting in a design that balances strength, proportion and refinement with notable precision.

With this relaunch, Fredericia brings the MK16 into its permanent collection, marking a natural extension of a portfolio that already includes seminal works by Kaare Klint, Børge Mogensen, Nanna Ditzel and Hans J. Wegner. By assuming custodianship of Koch's work, the company aims to ensure that this cornerstone of Danish design heritage continues to serve, adapt and endure for generations.

The MK16 Folding Chair is designed for everyday life and rewards regular use. Over time, its materials develop a natural patina: wood, saddle leather and brass gain warmth and character while maintaining structural integrity. This gradual evolution is integral to the chair's presence and longevity.

Each chair is handcrafted in Denmark at Fredericia's carpentry workshop in Them, using solid oak or beech. The production process adheres closely to the original design, with meticulous attention to detail ensuring consistency, durability and fidelity to Koch's intent. A solid wood frame provides strength, while refined brass components articulate the folding mechanism. The seat and back are made from robust cotton canvas, complemented by thick, vegetable-tanned saddle leather armrests.

Material selection is guided by performance, durability and the ability to mature gracefully through use, reinforcing the MK16's relevance nearly a century after its original design.

The relaunch was announced on 21 January 2026. Fredericia notes that images associated with the MK16 Folding Chair are not to be published before 17 February.

With the return of the MK16 Folding Chair, Fredericia continues to position Danish Modernism not as a historical artefact, but as a living design tradition, one that remains pertinent to contemporary European interiors and everyday use.
