A Chinese-made LED table lamp has been blocked at the UK border after being deemed a serious fire hazard. The lamp, sold via Amazon and featuring an attached wall plug, failed to meet critical safety standards, prompting action by the Office for Product Safety and Standards.

Officials noted that the plug face did not conform to BS1362 dimensional requirements, preventing a secure connection with sockets. In addition, insufficient creepage and clearance distances between internal circuits created a risk of overheating or explosion in the event of a current surge or product fault.
The product also fell short in labelling and documentation, further violating safety requirements. Authorities confirmed that it failed to comply with the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 and the Plugs and Sockets (Safety) Regulations 1994.
As a result, the lamp was rejected at the border, and the online listing has been removed by Amazon. The Office for Product Safety and Standards emphasised that such interventions are vital to prevent unsafe electrical products from reaching consumers, particularly those imported through online marketplaces.
This case highlights ongoing concerns about imported electronics and reinforces the need for stringent compliance with UK electrical safety standards. Consumers are advised to purchase products only from verified sources and to check for proper certification marks on electrical items.
