Amazon to close first UK fulfilment centre

Amazon has announced plans to close its Milton Keynes fulfilment centre, the first it opened in the UK in 1998. The closure will affect 590 employees, who will be offered transfers to other Amazon sites or the company's new £500 million Northampton warehouse, set to open in May 2026 and expected to employ up to 2,000 people. The Milton Keynes sortation centre, employing 1,100 workers, will remain operational.

An Amazon spokesperson emphasised that the decision is part of ongoing network evaluations to meet business needs and enhance employee and customer experience. The company reassured staff that support will be provided throughout the consultation and transfer process.

This move is part of Amazon's broader UK investment strategy, which includes a £40 billion commitment over three years, opening four new fulfilment centres, and creating thousands of jobs. Two additional large warehouses are planned for the East Midlands, scheduled for completion in 2027.
