German discount retailer to open branch in Ikea

Ikea Klagenfurt (Austria) is set to gain a new tenant as a German discount retailer prepares to open a branch in the Swedish furniture giant's complex. The announcement comes after Ikea has sought a subtenant since 2023 amid declining demand in Carinthia, following the bankruptcy of local retailer Kika.

Thomas Philipps, founded in 1986 and headquartered in Bissendorf, operates 250 stores in Germany, twelve in Austria, and seven in Lithuania. The retailer sells 18,000 products, including home and garden items, DIY supplies, household goods, cosmetics, camping equipment, electrical appliances, and textiles.

The Austrian expansion is part of a broader growth plan, with four to six new locations planned nationwide this year. With 3,500 employees and revenue exceeding €1 billion, Thomas Philipps emphasises climate protection and sustainability initiatives.

The move is expected to help Ikea reach new customers in Carinthia (Austria), a region experiencing low residential construction and subdued furniture demand. The Klagenfurt store is part of Thomas Philipps' strategy to strengthen its footprint in Austria.
