British fabricators gain new mark to safeguard health

The Worktop Fabricators Federation (WFF) is introducing a new industry quality mark, described as "a landmark first for British manufacturing," to identify surfaces produced safely and protect fabricators' health. The scheme, launching this year, responds to rising silicosis cases linked to unsafe working practices.

Consumers, designers, retailers and specifiers will be able to use the mark to distinguish responsible fabricators from those that "compromise standards and endanger the workforce." Accreditation requires companies to undergo regular independent workplace assessments by registered occupational hygienists, focusing on recognising, evaluating and controlling health hazards.

Participating firms must implement robust management systems, monitor worker health, provide training on safe practices, and promote the Lungs at Work project, which facilitates medical screening for over-exposed workers. Enhanced health surveillance, aligned with new clinical guidance, will also be mandatory.

The mark applies to engineered stone and all high-silica materials posing a health risk. It aligns with guidance from the British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS) and Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Kevin Bampton, BOHS chief executive, stated: "Buying a worktop from an accredited company means you are buying from a business able and willing to protect a worker's health."
